Hmmmm....I didn't have mean ones except Sister Mary Jane the principal....I remember having to stand in the coat closet for something, not sure what old age I do believe is coming around....(the good thing is my desk was by the radiator)

This forum cracks me up!
I just checked the responses from the 'where shall I drive' question, and you guys are all talking about nuns....!
Wonderful!!!

I still haven't made it out of Anchorage....

I had to put off buying a car until next week because I had to buy a flight back
to Portland Oregon for my final immigration interview. $700 round trip just to
get my fingerprints and photo updated AGAIN, so I can go from being 'conditional' to 'unconditional' permanent resident.

Not much will change. I still pay taxes.
I still don't get to vote on who spends them.

And I still can't join the military as a nurse, because you need to be a citizen
to hold an Officer position. But they'll let me join as a regular Infantryman.

I guess the crux of it is they'll let me take orders but not give any until I
pledge alleigance.

Smart.

I wish I could apply the same rules to my wife and children....

Don't tell them I said that....

The good news is that Congress recently (February 2009) shortened the period non-citizens in the military can obtain their citizenship to only six months.

That is good.
I have another year to wait to apply for citizenship based on marriage.

England is bass ackwards. When I went back for a visit in January I
went into the Royal Airforce recruitment office to find out what it would
take to apply to be a flight nurse. Thinking they would be keen to have
me, seeing as UK tax payers paid for my education and I'm a British
citizen....
Well, because I haven't been resident in the UK for the past 5 years
it excluded me. Even though I'm born and bred and I haven't exactly
been in Afghanistan or Russia for the past five years - I've been in
Oregon... Although perhaps that equates to the same thing to the
British government....

Did I mention how VERY happy I am to be in Alaska? Even though I
have yet to make it out of the city limits (and most people don't even
count Anchorage as Alaska...). It still feels good.

The wife and kids arrive June 12th.

I applaud you for doing it right and coming in the front door. Millions of people swin across the southern border and then just demand citizenship and welfare benefits. They don't even want to have to fill out the application. To top that off the village idiot that was elected POTUS is inclined to wave his magic wand over them and grant them their wish.

Do you think he'll refund all the fees and expenses you've put forth to do it right????

I don't mean to complain about the immigration process - yes you have
to jump through hoops and pay lots of money for every form you submit
(okay, I will complain a little...) like every time I've had my photo and
fingerprints taken it costs $80 (and for some reason they've needed
my fingerprints taken three times in as many years - do my fingerprints
weirdly morph during that time?) and it only costs $25 to have them
done at the local County Court. Or that each form I submit costs
around $350 - $500. But it's been worth every penny (read cent)...
If you think America has a bad illegal immigration problem then
England seems to have an 'open door' policy to anyone and everyone.
There is SO much wrong with the immigration system in the UK it's
insane. For instance, I am not anti-muslim per se, but there are some
ethnic groups (Muslims) whose birth rate is 3 or 4 times that of Native
Britons. Now, if you live in a democracy (which the UK technically ISNT
because we have a monarchy, although for all intents and purposes
we ARE a democracy) then it's 'majority rule'. Well, when you ignore
birth rate trends in immigrant groups you soon see massive population
discrepancies. For instance, Native Britons are now a minority group
living mainly in the outskirts of London.
What irks me, is that this last half century their has been this huge
shift in cultural ideals that says: 'Everyone is wonderful, we must
embrace all cultures and religions - not to do so is xenophobic.'
That seems to be the thrust behind the whole thing including our
joining the European Union (effectively making us a 'western state'
within the EU - hear me spit in defiance...). But for the past thousand
years or more we've been at war with almost every country in Europe
- France, Spain, Germany, Italy, even beyond - Russia - and even
further back - the Holy Crusades against the moors.
Now we have English churches, hundreds of years old, being bought
up by Muslim groups (Allah says anyone who builds a mosque will
have a place in Heaven - google the amount of mosques built in the
UK in the past few years, something like 5,000!!!) while Christianity
declines in the UK. What did our government do to counter this?
They make it so that anyone wishing to be a British Citizen has to
take a 'cultural test' to show they have knowledge of Britain...
What a total farce! And if you fail their (I imagine) incredibly simple
test? Do they decline you entry? I cant imagine so - that's a lawsuit
waiting to happen, I imagine they make you retest. Big deal.
And don't even get me started on the Chunnel. Genius! Lets
take our completely water enclosed Island that has been our main
line of defense for thousands of years and build a tunnel under the
ocean joining us to mainland Europe.... Genius!

So much great work undone in the past 50 years.
No one knows where 'Great Britain' is anymore, it's now the United
Kingdom, within the European Union (spit spit spit...).

It all happens so insiduously no one cared. And those who did were
branded xenophobes.

At least America hasn't hit that extreme quite yet. Most Americans
I've met agree that the European Union is not a good thing.

For all it's faults, America is still one of the best countries in the world
to live in (maybe not so much California... ).

England has gone to the dogs.

Too many people. And none of them whose grandparents died in
one of two world wars to keep most people OUT.

Complain all you like. You are entitled. Anyone who takes the expense and trouble to go through the legal process to become a citizen has earned the right to belly-ache about that process all they want.

You have to realize that no matter where you live, there will always be something you dislike about the place, or its people, or its politics. Alaska will be no different from England in that respect.

I am simply saying that no matter where someone lives, they will always find something they don't like about the place, the people, or the politics. No place is perfect, but Alaska is as close to perfection as it gets.

As far as bears in England are concerned, bear-baiting was popular in England until the 19th century. From the 16th century, many bears were maintained for baiting. In its best-known form, arenas for this purpose were called bear-gardens, consisting of a circular high fenced area, the "pit", and raised seating for spectators. A post would be set in the ground towards the edge of the pit and the bear chained to it, either by the leg or neck. A number of well-trained hunting dogs would then be set on it, being replaced as they tired or were wounded or killed. In some cases the bear was let loose, allowing it to chase after animals or people. For a long time, the main bear-garden in London was the Paris Garden at Southwark.

England does have moose, they just call them elk.

England has no polar bears or Guido, as far as I know.

No Guido? Sounds like a pretty boring place... Well Kodiak has Elk, and they ain't Moose!

But you are right, there are people who will complain no matter where they hang their hat.
