As some of you know, I am watching my 2 grandchildren while my daughter is deployed. The baby is 14 months old, and it seem he is sleepy around 6pm! He falls asleep and stays asleep until 6 or 7 in the morning. He also naps (once) during the day. He seems healthy and normal otherwise. His sister is 5 and goes to bed around 8 or 830 and gets up at 8 for school... and sometimes wants to sleep longer...

I am wondering - since they moved from North Carolina this past May, if it has something to do with the darkness? I know I feel tired earlier than normal - but thought it was due to taking care of 2 little ones alone.

Anyone have experience giving a 1 year old Vitamin D3? Should I?

Thanks... just curious, I haven't been around kids in a while.

I think those sleeping habits seem pretty normal for a 14 month old and a 7 year old. Were they sleeping that well for your DD?
It would be a good idea to talk a Doctor or other care provider about the Vit D thing but personally, I think VIt is a good thing for all Alaskans. I'm sure they make Gummy Vit D too.

The darkness does have a lot to do with it as you'll find out this summer when they will awake longer. Really though, that is not too much sleep for children that age, especially ones going through the stress of momma being gone. Talk to their pediatrician about giving them Vit. D.

Lucky you for them sleeping so good! They do make baby vitamin drops, but I don't know the age range for those gummy vitamins.

Thanks! I am SO out of practice with this whole little kid / diaper rodeo!!!

It was much easier running missions in Ethiopia than running a household with kids!

I never have the laundry or housework caught up! I feel like I need Alice from the Brady Bunch to come fix me!

OK... time to get the whole morning / school thing going...
I will check with the docs re: vitamins...

I appreciate the help!

Enjoy those deep sleeping kids!

Wait to late spring when youngsters become like energizer bunnies staying up late into the summer with all the light returning!

I would definitely ask about the vitamin D. When we knew we were moving to the North Slope, I called the pediatrician. They recommended that my daughters take extra Vit D. I don't know about dosing for a 14 month old though. My kids are almost 6, 7 and 11.

The darkness could be doing it too. My kids are dragging lately. Even when they get a great night's sleep, they still are tired in the mornings. I think they are having trouble adjusting to life without sun.

Girl, if they are happy and content all day, and you are....don't knock it...come spring when the days get longer, I would get room-darkening shades or blinds up so they do sleep...a few years ago I had a 4-year-granddaughter up there from MN...she said in August after a night it wasn't light out all night, "Gramma I woke up and got scared, it was dark."...Just a what might be to come (Winter is kind of like hibernation)...
