I like to fish, but have never fished for salmon before... what types of rods & reels do I need?

Also... if I wanted to learn to hunt (bear, caribou?) what would I use? A .308? A 12 guage? (Not a bow hunter)

Are there places or clubs for women to learn to hunt?

Thanks!

Your first job is to move to Alaska. Then make friends with some people who will teach your the ropes and probably even loan you the gear until you can buy your own.

It's expensive to hunt in Alaska unless you are a resident. It takes a full year of residency to be able to buy a resident hunting and fishing license.

Thanks - I wasn't sure if there were exceptions for military / disabled vet... (I'm only 30% and a reservist)... I'll check it out... I saw some good deals on shotguns and fishing gear on an auction, so thought if I knew what to buy, I could pick it up now and save some money.

The link Tigre79 posted is the best idea for anybody who wants to hunt and take care of the meat as require by law in Alaska. The training conducted by F&G, geared for "outdoors women" is simply outstanding, and the right way to go for any woman who wants to hunt and then take care of things after the kill.

Yeah, I'd take advantage of them if I could, but the schedules and locations don't really allow that. If you're in Anchorage or Fairbanks there should be plenty of opportunity for classes, clubs, etc. I'm hoping to get into an avalanche safety course early this winter, which is a great idea for anyone wanting to get out in the mountains in the winter.

here's the link to the National Parks and Federal Recreational Land Access page...first paragraph contains link for application and the 3rd tell about disability requirement....disabled friend has one and gets in free to all parks, land etc....discounts on many places with the pass....cost is $10..even if you had to pay for the pass it is worth the money.
