I'll be in ANC for a week in August.

Looking for a nice campground with cheap cabins and showers available.

Big Bear in Wasilla has both of these, but has bad reviews and is so far from Anchorage. Anyone been?

I didn't like the one right in town- Ship Creek. Doesn't feel like real camping with the chain link fence and the homeless guys wandering through!

I also looked at Chugach- no showers. I can't go a week without a shower.

Alternatives?

My uncle lives in that area of Wasilla, he's had no problems with people camping there. I'd say it's a good place to camp, much better than the Anchorage area. It's very easy to get in and out of, pull out on Trunk and drive up a little ways to it.

Ah, just noticed I was looking at reviews for a different campground in Wasilla, called "Alaska R&R", the ones for Big Bear are actually good!

I sent them an email, I hope there's still a cabin available that week. $250 for 7 days sounds like a pretty good deal. Thanks warpt.

Those solar shower bag things work pretty well for a basic scrub-down.

That's true, Frostnip. I just thought there'd be more full service campgrounds in the area.

I just got an email back from Big Bear--they don't allow pets in the cabins. Darn! It seemed perfect!

I'll keep searching...
