Been reading all the threads for a while now. Thanks for all the info I've picked up. Wife is getting transferred/promoted to Anchorage. We are planning on driving from Denver area to Anchorage. Based on opinions and experience what are some of the best places to stop for a day or two? Hotels and or camping are fine. Not sure if camp areas will be open by that time(mid May is likely time frame). Anyway we are definitely looking forward to finding somewhere to stretch our legs for a bit on the way. We will have the ALCAN travel book, just wanting some picks based on others' experience. Thanks in advance!

Liard Hot Springs would be my choice for a two-day stop on the Alaska Highway.

Well after the Hot Springs, it depends on what you like to to, there is some really nice lodges along the highway that are really great to spend some time at. Destruction Bay is a neat place to spend a few days poking around. In the summer there is a few tourist type places that may be open now, but with the price of gas, not too many tourist may be driving up this year and they may be closed.

The Milepost is another good place to look for good places that may trick your fancy as well. Another idea is to drive to Skagway, spend a day or two there then catch the Alaska Marine Ferry over to Haines, there is a couple of really nice places to see there then you can drive back to the Alcan from there and keep going. Very nice trip and a lot of neat scenery.

Good luck on your trip, but me, I would stay at Laird Hots Springs, there is a camp ground there and a lodge across the street to eat at.

Or you could put your car on the Ferry system at Bellingham in Washington and take the ferry system to Haines, that is a great trip, same places the Cruise lines go, but cheaper and you get to meet locals verses the tourist.

So far the hot springs definitely in the lead. I think we've ruled out the ferry at this point do to logistic issues and having furball with us. He would not like the part where he got left in the car I think we do want to use the system to get back down to Seattle and visit family at some point but pretty committed to doing the drive this time. Thanks for the replies.

Well the ferry ride from Skagway to Haines is about a forty five min. ride up around the point, so it is a short run for the dog.

A day or two? Banff/Jasper would be at the top of my list. Or Whitehorse, if you're hauling some ATVs. The Carcross desert just south of there is really cool. I'd like to spend some time around Muncho lake too, myself. Really beautiful area. Liard is definitely worth a stop, but just for an evening, at least in my opinion.

Did Banff last summer it's an amazing area, not sure how national parks in Canada are with dogs though. Probably a no go. Maybe we'll have to ship the dog or something. He seems to be adding to the logistical problems. Don't have the four wheeler anymore, trailer will be full of dishes, clothes, etc.... not too exciting but they got space and the four wheeler/plow was sold. I think the wife would spend a week at/in the hot springs if possible. We would like to stop in an area we could do some good exploring on foot for sure, may have mountain bikes along if we don't ship them also.

We always stop at Muncho Lake in BC. Beautiful place with campgrounds and a nice lodge with great food last time we were through.
