Lake living and boating can be so relaxing but if you’re worried about racism and not being accepted it’s not worth it :-(.

If you see my earlier post, 10 yrs ago.. lol... I just recently left the area after the passing of my husband. Nothing changed for the worse at all. Not anywhere near my home anyway. There were plenty of black families in the area. They just apparently have better things to do than be hanging out here to respond, lol.

Much of the lakeshore lies within Cullman County, which is not at all diverse. The Black population of the county is only 1%.

Default Love Smith Lake, but...

I grew up coming to this lake in the summers. My grandparents had a house not far from Duncan's Marina. I remember the smell and feel of the lake and it always brings back to best childhood memories!

We recently met family for the long LABOR Day weekend. The AirBNB we rented was right across the lake from the marina and in view of the bridge. It was an awesome weekend.

While there, I noticed a house nearby, that had a rebel flag under a TRUMP 2024 sign.

I am 1/2 of a lesbian couple, both of whom have super white, republican families who love us unconditionally, and I am torn between wanting to live here as apposed to a more diverse area.

My initial thought is NO, I do not want to live in such a WHITE area, but rather somewhere much more racially and LBGTQ diverse.

I pondered this choice, for it is a choice, for sometime. Looking back at the suburb where I grew up in Georgia, and how it has gone from totally straight, white, male dominated to racially and humanly diverse. That actually gave me hope. Things change every day, and I thought, no matter where we live, we can spread our joy and love for both nature and humanity, and possibly help create a safe and peaceful place for all people, regardless of differences.

I would LOVE to live on this lake!
