Not all the African slaves that were brought to America looked the same. It seems to be a common belief that they were all very dark skin with wide noses, and big lips with kinky hair. Why is that?
Some had brown skin tones, as well as golden brown skin tones.

Well, those are by far the most prevalent West African physical traits. Even if you go to W.Africa today, that will by far be the most common phenotype. There's nothing wrong with this.
Just like if you go to China, most will have "almond shaped eyes" and thin black hair.

What the OP is talking about goes far beyond West Africa. Even with that said, you can't lump all West Africans together and say that they all look alike. You have to take into account ethnic differences.

But Africans were/are very diverse. They did not all have dark skin tones. Some of them had brown and light skin tones. And they did not all have wide noses or kinky hair, either.

It's obvious that the inhabitants of Africa are diverse. I can easily tell a southern African from an East African and I can tell a West African from a Horner. North Africans especially tend to look different from the other groups.
West/Central Africans usually share the same phenotype as other West/Central Africans. I will only focus on West/Central Africa since this is where the vast majority of the [transatlantic] slaves were taken from.
Yeah there are some Igbo's and other ethnic tribes who have a minority of lighter brown people. But there is no actual proof that they have not intermingled w/other groups. Ancient Africa was engaging in foreign trade&interaction long before colonization.
As for the saying of black Africans being the most diverse; that means that they have the most genetic diversity which may be true. I don't think they have any more physical/visible diversity than any other group.

It seems some people (mostly racists) seem to think black Africans can ONLY look one way.
Indeed people from different regions of Africa do look different from one another. West Africa vs East Africa, etc.
