I'm not sure if I should keep this thread on "City vs. City" or the "World" forum.
Anyway, I'm just curious to know....Which city is the de facto Sub Saharan African Capital? Nairobi, Johannesburg or Lagos? or maybe another city?
This is the reason why I'm asking......
New York is the de facto Capital of North America...London is the Capital of EU...Mexico City is the capital of Central America...Sao Paulo is the Capital of South America...Moscow is for Eastern Europe...Cairo is for the Middle East/Muslim world (with Dubai catching up very quickly)....Japan is East Asia (with Beijing being a very close second)...Mumbai (Bombay) is the capital of South Asia...Sydney is the capital of Australia/Oceania
What about Black Africa?
I know that Lagos is the De facto Capital of West Africa; Johannesburg for South Africa; Nairobi for East Africa; and maybe Kinshasha for Central Africa. But which city is or will be the "New York" of this region?

For me it's the Mother City, Cape Town. Can hold it's own when compared with many far bigger cities in the world.
Actually parts of Durban are still nice. If only the centre could be somehow made safer as well as the super beaches. Crime limits Durbs potential. It is the major port on the East coast and one of the main trade centres of Africa.
Also what great countryside, could be Scotland on a nice day.
But at the end of the day there are few cities as fair as Cape Town for a natural setting and beauty to be found anywhere in the world.
I picked Johannesburg over Cape Town b/c it has the larger population, economy, airport and financial sector. It's more urbanized and is the capital of the wealthiest province in the country. It also has the largest economy of any metropolitan region in Sub-Saharan Africa.
Someone mentioned Cairo. Cairo is more affiliated with the Middle East/Muslim world than Black Africa (as well as Casablanca).
Lagos has its problems, but its to big to ignore. Nairobi isn't as big as the other cities but it is a very important hub in East Africa with a fast growing economy and population.
There are no de-facto accepted capitals anywhere in the world, and there is no need for such a thing.
As to London being the EU's capital, I doubt that you get a majority for this in any European country, let alone in the UK itself as a large part of Brits, if not most, would rather leave the EU than stay.
If you really have the need to name a EU capital, many would likely say Brussels.
By the way, Japan is not a city, so it cannot be a capital.
