Washington (CNN) -- Dozens of lawmakers support legislation that would set up a more streamlined system for matching Haitian orphans with families in the United States, a U.S. senator said Tuesday.
Sen. Mary Landrieu, D-Louisiana, said that the initial focus of the legislation would be on children orphaned by the January 12 earthquake in Haiti but that in the long term, it also would address other adoption efforts.
It sounds like our government is taking over. Why is it up to the US to make decisions that the Haitian government should be making? Is it ok with them that we are taking their children? In all the chaos I can see where it would be easy for something like this to fall through the cracks, but in all honesty, I think the US should wait until things quiet down before streamlining the moves that take hundreds (or tousands) of children from their home country just because they are going through a crisis.
Ten Americans were arrested in Haiti for attempting to bus 33 Haitian children in ages between 2 months and 12 years old without documentation. Their intention was to take them into the Dominican Republic to start an orphanage for adoptions later. Their goad was to collect 100 children.
It is so wrong for Americans to think they should simply remove all those children at a time like this. If anything, they should have gone down and helped with the kids right there.
I agree, let the Haitian goverment handle it. I'm sure there are plenty of American babies out there waiting to be adopted in the interim.
America should take care of our own kids first. There are plenty of starving children right here in our own country that need aid and plenty of them also need adoptive homes.
Just a thought: There are so many Haitians in Florida working in the McDonalds, Burger Kings, and other retail stores. Our children are also looking for jobs but can't get these particular jobs because the jobs are taken by people from other countries. Alot of the employees do not even speak english. You see this all over Boca Raton, Boynton Beach and other towns in S. Florida. It's a shame
Well there's going to be a bunch more. The catholic church want to bring hundreds, if not thousands of orphans here because or the earthquake. Those people who are already here have special treatment to stay because of the quake.
Please, to anyone who is now considering an adoption from Haiti and you believe that things will be expedited... PLEASE do your research , there are many, many scams out there right now by people in both Haiti & the United States (unfortunately) who are taking advantage of a horrible situation, as happens with disasters such as this...
IF you are strongly interested in an adoption from Haiti, go through a reputable adoption agency. Do not believe what people are saying, there are not "special" expedited cases happening, at least not legally.
I have 2 Internationally adopted children and have many contacts in the "adoption community" who are putting out warnings to people.
Just be careful, if it sounds "to good to be true" in other words; if you are being told that you can have a child in a few weeks, if you are a waiting parent and are now being told that your adoption can be expedited for an extra "fee", etc.... it is most likely not true.
These children of Haiti that have gone through this horrible tragedy certainly do not need anyone taking advantage of their situation for their own ,selfish needs.
Just do your research, you and the children, will be much better off.
