how do you work out the stats?

here is a question that I've been trying to work out.

how do you actually work out how many times a poster's comments have been read;

does it go on the number of hits per thread or something?

It's a reflection of how many times a page that included the member's post was accessed. There's no way to tell what was or wasn't actually read, but the forum tracks the number of times a page with one of your posts is opened, and that number is what appears on your user stats. It's not the number of views of an entire thread - some of those can go on for hundreds or thousands of posts, and just because a person looks at the first page doesn't give viewing credit to a post buried back on page 89. It's how many times a thread page containing one of your posts was accessed.

So when I look at your stats a little after 9:00 Central Time and see that the forum describes your 129 posts as having been read 11,351 times, what that means is that pages that contain those posts have been accessed 11,351 times.

Can't really get more precise than that; absent cameras attached to every computer scanning the eye movements of the user, there's no way to say for certain how many times your posts were read. But the page views measure probably gets reasonably close.
