I think I walked into a 99 cent store once. There wasn't anything there that I wanted, and never went back. However, if by chance it had something you did want, I guess it would make a difference.

Last time I went in a .99 cent store, I was 20 years old. Haven't been back in 16 years.

Founded in Los Angeles in 1982 by David Gold, 99 Cents Only pioneered the single-price retail concept. At the time, dollar stores were seen as dumping grounds for undesirable products, but the Gold family made the stores bright and well-organized, with good-quality merchandise including groceries and household supplies.

For years, it remained one of the few true “dollar” stores, with items priced at 99 cents or less or grouped to sell for a total of 99 cents.

That changed in 2008 when, faced with fast-rising inflation, soaring food and fuel prices, and a higher minimum wage, 99 Cents Only announced that it was straying from its long-standing price strategy.

Three years later, the company announced that it had agreed to be sold in a deal valued at about $1.6 billion, as investors eyed dollar stores that had grown in popularity during the Great Recession.

They’re closing all stores in Nevada, Arizona and Texas as well. OP, your thread would be better suited for the Business Forum (as opposed to California).

The one in Sylmar does a bustling business. Every time I go there I see people who don't look rich with $50 worth in their cart.

Yep, saw about this this morning! I'm pretty sad to hear this! I go sometimes. I like them BETTER than Dollar Tree. I'll try nto stock up on some things before their last day. I'll get their juice beverages, some condiments, tissue refills in the automotive section (if they still have that there), & see what other stuff I can get.

I love the .99 cent store, they also carry produce, & I do buy that. Plus some funny little plant pots. They have a good selection of quirky things. I will miss them.

I originally posted it in San Diego, which is where I live, but the mods moved it to here. I'm sure it's already been posted in the business section by now, though.

The one by my house always has long lines with only two cashiers. Not sure why they never implemented self checkout. Even Dollar General in other parts of the country has self check out now.
