Description: Colington Speedway features three tracks and about 40 Indy-style two-seaters or NASCAR-style 5.5 horsepower cars. Riders choose a kiddie track, a family road course, or a slick track. The facility’s gift shop features NASCAR items, Outer Banks souvenirs, and children’s toys. Colington Speedway is open daily from Memorial Day through Labor Day until 10 p.m. The track is also open on weekends until 10 p.m. in the spring. Call for opening hours and more information.

Description: The Pit bills itself as a “surf hangout.” The setup includes a 3,000-square-foot surf shop that covers all board sports—surfing, body boarding, skimming, and skateboarding. Owners Steve Pauls and Ben Sproul, both devout surfers, sell a large selection of new, used, and custom boards, including the locally made Gale Force boards, plus a selection of wet suits and related accessories. All boards are available for sale or rent. Surf lessons and camps are offered in the summer months for groups or individuals. Lessons run about 2 hours and include board rental and a T-shirt.
3. Avalon Fishing Pier

Description: Avalon Pier, in the heart of Kill Devil Hills, was built in the mid-1950s and is 705 feet long. The pier has lights for night fishing, a snack bar, a bait and tackle shop, ice, video games, and rental fishing gear. A busy place in season, the pier is open 24 hours a day. The pier house is open from 6 a.m. until midnight. The pier is closed Dec through mid-March. People with disabilities are admitted free.
4. T.I.’S Bait & Tackle

Description: T.I.’s is a member of the North Carolina Beach Buggy Association. The shop offers quality tackle and fresh bait and is an authorized Penn parts distributor and repair station. T.I.’s is also a factory-authorized Daiwa service warranty center. The shop is open year-round.
