Description: With a couple players going on to the NFL, including Pro Bowl guard Larry Allen of the Dallas Cowboys, the NCAA Division II Seawolves reached a respected place among small football programs. That came to an end in 1997, when the university dropped football in the face of formidable travel expenses. Sonoma State still has plenty of athletics. Soccer is king and queen there: The women, who made it to the Division II championship game in 1998, enjoyed great success in the ’90s, winning six straight Northern California Athletic Conference titles from 1990 to 1995 and a national championship in 1990. The men won five of seven NCAC titles between 1990 and 1996, and went on in 2002 to win the NCAA Division II national championship—the first ever for any SSU men’s team.
