I hadn’t been down at the exit 312 area for a while, but last week I had an inspection near there. I didn’t fully realize just how close 540 will be coming to there. Going to be a game changer once it’s done as there will be a newly widened way into Raleigh and a brand new route into RTP taking cars off 40.

There are several overnight closures planned for I-40 East at the US-70 Clayton Bypass.

I was employed by DOT during the time when the US 70 Clayton Bypass off I-40 was being designed. At the same time, I-540 was routed to cross at the same point. It appears that it is what will be implemented after years of controversy. The chief design engineer for the project referred to the intersection of I-40, I-540, and US-70 as Spaghetti City. So that's what we'll see when it's complete.

I still don't understand when there's such a jam-up now with two highways merging why the smart ones think it's a good idea to add a third.

Just that one interchange looks to be around 600 acres, or almost one square mile, and includes its own mini-Outer Loop encircling four cloverleaf/trumpet loops. Not sure what the benefit is to having three freeways intersect at one location, other than to provide the engineers' compasses with a workout. Usually, roundabout interchanges require less space, not more...

I don't think Garner wanted a new I-40 interchange further north, which would've been part of the Red route alternative, IIRC.

Starting around the beginning of next year, there will be closures on Old McCullers Road, which is expected to last about 3 months. A section of Tech Road will also be closed to all traffic.

Those mini outer loops are, of course, cheaper alternatives to building flyovers which are quite expensive.

This new turbine interchange keeps the roadway supported by earth as much as possible rising slowly so that crossing the other roadways is merely a traditional overpass.

Having all highways meet at one node is obviously the most efficient and like the mixing bowl in Northern Virginia all of those ribbons of lanes will "deposit" you onto the appropriate other road based on your destination.
.
I liked the reporter's use of "depositing" you onto the correct ramp towards your destination when the rebuild was finished in Springfield years ago
