Love wine? Love France? What about trains? Well, since you’re a Secret London reader we’re guessing you almost definitely love those too. So, boy have we got some news for you. A international direct rail journey from London to Bordeaux that we first heard about some five years ago is back in the news. After a fair amount of radio silence, we’ve finally heard more thanks to an article from The Times. And it looks like that direct train to Bordeaux could be coming in just few years.
The project was initially side-lined due to Covid, and then put on the back burner for an indefinite amount of time. However, Dylan Crowther, the Chief Executive of HS1, has decided it’s time to get Londoners excited about international rail travel again. And what better way to do that than a direct train to Bordeaux that will take less than five hours?!
Direct trains from London to Basel in Switzerland, would be another fantastic new service and expand links to the region beyond that of the seasonal Ski Trains to the Alps.

I would think Geneva would be the better ski train. Chamonix is really close and there are express buses from the airport to a bunch of other French ski resorts.

In terms of the seasonal Ski trains they are a partnership between Eurostar and Travel Ski.
I think this will continue even if new services to Switzerland and elsewhere are announced, and the new services including sleeper services across Europe may well encourage people to ditch the airlines in favour of the train.
Belgium Thalys and French Eurostar have completed their merger and from October, Thalys trains will be re-branded as Eurostar.

What does this mean in practice? You will still be able to travel to all current Thalys destinations, but also those served by Eurostar.
There is also a new super fast link that was built between Bordeaux and Paris Montparnasse with a journey time just over two hours.
Eurostar is looking to improve connections in relation to services fro the UK and new sleeper trains and high speed services are very welcome news.
In other good news, streamlined contactless check in, will now mean most international checks can now be bypassed and will improve waiting times at places such as London St Pancras.
