for some strange reason I have a mental image of this cat meowing and bubble coming out of his mouth like the boy ALfalfa from the little rascals tv show.

Yeah, I'm not going to put anything on my boy that would hurt him. He can just be dirty. He's a little *boy*, after all!!!
When I rescued my now one year old kitten she was a teeny tiny baby crawling with fleas. Black kitten, but there were so many fleas you could see them crawling on her. She had to have several baths, in between repeated combings, simply to save her from being eating alive by the fleas as she was much too tiny for any treatment.
I used Dawn dish soap, and she had no adverse affects from it. Would I bathe a cat weekly or even monthly in it? No, I don't believe in bathing cats unless absolutely necessary, and even then, I recommend not using any soap at all if possible.
It was necessary for this kitten, because it is soap that drowns the fleas, not plain water, and, since I had read much about Dawn being used on kittens and wildlife, I used Dawn. I couldn't keep up with them with combing, her skin would have had to be combed off.
Dawn may be made with petroleum, but it removes oil and can be rinsed off.
Dawn was recommended by cat breeders for cat show grooming. I would recommend it for infrequent use to remove a greasy film from the fur. Just like any shampoo - rinse well.

I will gladly amend: to any cat not already dying of petroleum and not being drained of blood by parasitic fleas.....
If a cats life is in danger and DAWN will help save them yes, by all means, but know the difference, which catsmom21 does,

Just to follow up on this: Edward is all white again, perfectly clean and sweet, by his own self-bathing. I'm glad I didn't put him though the trauma of a bath, since it was primarily for aesthetic reasons, which is really not a good reason. He's fine.
As for the real nasty grease from under the car or machinery, drizzle crisco oil on first, work it a bit with fingers and comb out the grease wiping the comb down with paper towels, then the Dawn to get rid of the dirt and the crisco. you may find that teh Crisco will get the cat so clean you don't even need to shampoo, but do it anyway.
Help my baby kitty Luna has fleas. I did a dose of Frontline and she had an allergic reaction. The fleas went away for a min but they are back now. She is an indoor kitty and we dont have carpet so I clean the floor with clorox wipes to pick up the flea "poop". I cant afford a lot of money and I dont want Luna to get sick or die from using anything cheap. So I refrain from buying cheap.
