Sostomo Trail

Several trails run through Solstice Canyon in the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area. The so-called International Trail follows Solstice Creek along the canyon floor, but for those who seek a more challenging hike and some spectacular views, the spur known as the Sostomo Trail or Sostomo-Deer Valley Loop is just the way to spend three hours in nature.

The Sostomo Trail ascends the west wall of Solstice Canyon. It rises up through an elevation gain of 1,100 feet to reach a ridge high above the trailhead at an elevation of 1,200 feet. Along the way, the path passes through chaparral and coastal sage, ceanothus forest, oak woodlands, walnut groves, and grassy meadows. There are a couple of stream crossings, too. In total, the in and back journey from the canyon entrance covers 6.2 miles, four miles of which are the "loop," and is rated easy to moderate in terms of hiking difficulty.

Attractions to take note of include the panoramic vistas above Point Dume and out across Santa Monica Bay. There are picnic areas for enjoying a leisurely lunch, and the remains of the 1865 stone cottage known as the Keller House can be seen, too. The entrance to Solstice Canyon is located at the intersection of Solstice Canyon Road and Corral Canyon Road in Malibu, California 90265. There are currently no entrance or exit fees, and the area is open year-round.
