Description: Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center (TTUHSC) at El Paso offers students and residents a rich learning environment. Since 1973, TTUHSC students have gained experience in infectious disease, diabetes, migrant health, and community-oriented primary care. Through community partnerships, TTUHSC at El Paso faculty also lend their skills to underserved areas lacking adequate health care. Third- and fourth-year medical students currently train at the El Paso campus, along with residents in eight accredited programs. Texas Tech El Paso has played a vital role in El Paso’s health care history. It has been the academic home to many outstanding medical students, residents, and faculty. In 1969, the 61st Texas Legislature gave approval for a School of Medicine in West Texas and in 1973, the Regional Academic Health Center in El Paso, now known as TTUHSC, officially opened with a teaching affiliation with R. E. Thomason General Hospital, accepting the entire medical school class for the first five years. Today, Texas Tech El Paso has close to 1,000 faculty and staff members and is a flourishing health sciences center and medical center with clinics located in east, west, central, and northeast El Paso.
