Description: It’s hard to believe so much musical history was made in this small, simple studio, but that’s what makes Sun Studio fascinating. This is where African-American music crossed over into the mainstream, changing music forever. Elvis was discovered here, the first rock ‘n’ roll song (“Rocket 88”) was recorded, and a legendary roster of rockabilly and blues musicians made records here. They include Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, Johnny Cash, B. B. King, Howlin’ Wolf, Little Milton, and many others. Description: This jewel of a museum occupies the site of the legendary Stax Records, which turned out hits by Otis Redding, Carla Thomas, Isaac Hayes, and others in the 1960s and 1970s. By 1974 Stax was the fifth-largest black-owned business in the country, according to Black Enterprise magazine. The lively exhibits tell the Stax story, and they also provide a look at (and a listen to) the music of Memphis’s Hi Records and soul music produced in other cities.The museum is open daily.
