Description: There’s a strong emphasis on youth league bowling here, but the 12 lanes of tenpins are open to everyone. Hours are noon to about 9 or 10 p.m. all week in winter and 6 to around 9:30 p.m. Mon through Fri in summer, and reservations usually are not needed. An arcade room, a pro shop selling equipment, a snack bar, a bar serving beer and wine coolers, and party facilities add to the amenities. You can bowl for $3.75 per game and rent shoes for $1.25. Lessons from a certified coach are available.


2. Mystic Mountain Ski Area

Description: About 10 miles (15 kilometers) of gently sloping, groomed trails wind through the woods, beginning near the base of the downhill slopes. You can ski from 9 a.m. until dark. You can also rent skis, poles, and boots at the ski lodge. Mystic Mountain is open from approximately late Nov until about the end of Mar. It’s closed Mon and Tues except during the Christmas season.

Description: This one-man operation is locally known for custom rods, although the shop carries professionally manufactured rods, reels, flies, and tying accessories. Owner Dale Peters, a 40-year fishing veteran, performs repair work, and he conducts half-day or full-day guided fishing trips.

6. Recreational Springs Lodge

Description: Located just a few miles southwest of Lead, “Rec Springs” rents a variety of performance snowmobiles. Rates depend on the make and model of the sled, but they range from $85 to $100 for a half day and from $135 to $150 for a full day. There are modest accommodations here, as well as a restaurant, repair shop, and some clothing rentals. Before December the lodge is the domain of hunters.

Description: Single sleds rent for $135 a day Mon through Thurs and $159 Fri through Sun. Doubles are $145 and $169, respectively. Half-day rates start at $99. Prices include a helmet, but there is a $12 oil and gas charge. A full set of outerwear rents for $15, with varied prices for individual pieces. The lodge is 21 miles southwest of Lead.
