Description: The Wrights made hundreds of test flights at the 84-acre Huffman Prairie Flying Field. Huffman is also where more than a hundred pilots, including some of the country’s first military fliers, trained at the Wright School of Aviation. It’s here where the first commercial air-freight flight took off in 1910 (bound for Columbus). Displays include replicas of the brothers and 1905 hangar and launching catapult as well as the Wright Memorial, a 17-foot-high pink-granite obelisk. The Huffman Prairie Flying Field Interpretive Center includes exhibits that focus on the achievements of the brothers. Open 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. daily (until 6:30 p.m. from Memorial Day to Labor Day). Admission is free.

Description: This Victorian residence was home to one of America’s most famous black poets and authors. Dunbar was born of former slaves in Dayton in 1872 and rose to prominence in American literature before he died in 1906 at age 33. The house holds Dunbar’s library, manuscripts, and personal effects. Hours are 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday and noon to 4:30 p.m. Sunday from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Fall and winter hours vary, so call ahead. Admission is $5, $3 for students.

Description: Vandalia is one tough place to live if you’re a clay pigeon. Here is where you’ll find exhibits that trace trapshooting history and honor such famous markspersons as Annie Oakley. It’s the only known museum in the world devoted to the sport. Admission is free. Hours are 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. The museum is closed weekends and holidays. The Amateur Trapshooting Association, at the same address, holds its annual Grand American World Trapshooting Tournament here each August.

Description: The WACO Museum and Airfield is housed near the site of the original headquarters of the WACO Aircraft Company (once the world’s largest manufacturer of civilian aircraft). The museum features artifacts and memorabilia related to the WACOs, a series of mass-produced open-cockpit and cabin biplanes manufactured in the 1920s and 1930s. The company also produced combat gliders during World War II, which are on display as well. The Annual WACO Aircraft Reunion and Fly-In is held here each August, when dozens of WACO pilots bring their treasures to the landing field. Description: You can actually fly in a replica of the Wright Model B Flyer, the first mass-produced airplane in the world, at the Wright B Flyer Museum. The museum/hangar, located at the Dayton-Wright Brothers Airport, also features historical displays. With a takeoff speed of 41 miles per hour, the vintage biplane offers a cruising speed of 60 mph and cruising range of up to 100 miles. The Wright B comfortably seats two (you and the pilot). Description: This summertime outdoor drama at Caesar’s Ford Park Amphitheater may not be exactly accurate historically. But it’s an interesting show, featuring the story of Marmaduke van Swearingen, a white boy allegedly captured by the Shawnee at age 17 who became war leader for the Indian nation. Regardless of his ancestry, Blue Jacket was a crackerjack strategist who beat Gen. Arthur St. Clair in Indiana. Show times are 8:00 p.m. nightly June through Labor Day. Tickets are $14 for adults and $10 for children 12 and under on Tuesday through Saturday, and $9, $6 children, on Sunday. The amphitheater is 5 miles east of Xenia. Take U.S. Highway 42 northeast from Cincinnati or I-71 north to U.S. Highway 68 and follow the signs to Blue Jacket.
