Description: The Garcia Street Club offers child care, preschool, and kindergarten for ages three through six and has served Santa Fe families for more than 50 years. The former residence that houses the school is on the National Register of Historic Places. The year-round operation appeals to parents who work downtown but also attracts children from around the city. The nationally accredited program offers appropriate activities designed to help the child develop as a whole person. Unlike many preschools, Garcia Street Club does not follow the public-schools schedule and does not cancel when the Santa Fe Public Schools declare a snow day. The school is closed only 10 days a year.

Description: The federal government specifically designed this long-established program to give kids a boost before they start 1st grade. Families who meet low-income requirements can enroll their three-, four-, and five-year-olds, and there is no fee. Ten percent of the children served are kids with special needs. In addition to the programs’ educational and developmental activities, children receive a meal and a snack and medical and dental screening. Besides the Agua Fria school, Head Start offers eight other centers in Santa Fe County. The program encourages family involvement, and at least half the Head Start staff are parents of former Head Start children. The staff holds Child Development Associate credentials.

Description: A collaboration between the city of Santa Fe and Presbyterian Medical Services, this center accepts children ages two through five. With a maximum enrollment of 87, the center offers a 1–4 adult-to-child ratio in its two-year-old program and a 1–6 ratio in the preschool. Besides enjoying a building specifically designed for the child care, La Comunidad offers access to the play yard from each classroom and gives kids a choice of indoor or outdoor activities throughout the day. Some spaces are reserved for the children of city employees and for low-income families; fees are on a sliding scale. The play-based program incorporates developmentally appropriate early-childhood theory.

Description: The college offers infant/toddler care beginning with infants eight weeks old, a program for two-year-olds, and a preschool program, all designed to suit a child’s level of development. Each group has its own bright spacious room and access to its own area in a large outdoor play yard. Preference in enrollment goes to SFCC students, and the college reserves about 75 percent of the slots for these kids. The other places are roughly divided between staff/faculty and the general public. There’s always a waiting list for infant care. Kindergartners and pre-schoolers thrive at this clean, sunny center on the south side of the campus. Adult-to-child ratio is high here, and the staff is well trained and professional. The college also offers several day-camp options during summer months.

Description: Students attending Santa Fe Community College and community members with children ages 12 and younger who are in temporary crisis can receive short-term help of up to 100 hours of child care, in some cases twenty-four hours a day, through this program staffed by trained professionals at SFCC. It also offers consultations with child-care specialists and referrals to other agencies to help families dealing with hospitalization, financial crises, and other types of stress.
