Description: Known as Albuquerque’s boutique performance center, the Cell hosts live theater, music, dance, movie screenings, and special events. This historic Downtown building was home to a brewing company in the late 1800s and later a coal yard. Now converted to an intimate performance space seating 75, it is also home to the FUSION Theatre Company. A professional Equity company, producing work by emerging playwrights as well as classic American theater, FUSION has garnered excellent reviews for its rendition of such plays as John Patrick Shanley’s Pulitzer Prize–winning drama Doubt. It also sponsors educational programs for disadvantaged youth and produces the Seven, a new-plays festival offering annual opportunities for new voices to take the stage.

Description: Offering cutting-edge, dynamic contemporary live theater with a nod to the classics, the Vortex was named Best in Burque by the weekly Alibi newspaper for their production of Hedwig and the Angry Inch. Description: An ongoing series of 516 Words poetry readings takes place here, plus other literary events, book-release parties, and storytellings, with regional and visiting writers. The Treehouse Reading and Open Mic nights start with an hour-long open mic that anyone can sign up for, followed by a half-hour reading from a featured poet. Most events are free with pass-the-hat donations, and the space is gorgeous in the 516 Arts Gallery.

Description: Harwood presents a series of literary events under the umbrella of its Sowing Poetry program. These include the quarterly WordStream Poetry Reading Series of free readings from New Mexico poets. In 2008 they presented the first STIR: a Festival of Words poetry festival with other venues, including 516 Arts. The Harwood was a core supporter of Albuquerque’s Slam Poetry from the early days, providing space for rehearsals and fund-raising, and worked to bring the National Poetry Slam Championship to the city.
