Description: Where can you see the Mount Washington Morons take on the Last of the Monhegans 2 at speeds of up to 45 mph? At the U.S. National Toboggan Championships, of course. This campy event has been a staple at the Camden Snow Bowl ski area since 1990. Participants don costumes, form two-, three-, and four-person teams, grease up their toboggans, and hit the 400-foot toboggan chute on the side of Ragged Mountain with all they have. With the short walls and wooden trough of a funky old bobsled course, the long, straight chute is covered with ice, sends sledders down at high speeds, and shoots them out across Hosmer Pond to the delight of the gathered spectators. Times are recorded, and the fastest toboggan wins (there are also prizes for best costume, team spirit, and so on). There isn’t anything quite like it anywhere else, and everyone is welcome to enter. There is a fee to enter the contest but none to watch.
