Even after Henry Flagler’s extension of the Florida East Coast Railroad provided Florida Keys residents access to the mainland, communications on our islands were limited. To receive local news and news outside the South Florida area, residents relied on radio broadcasts from Miami, sporadic postal service, and what was probably their most effective and timely means of dispatch: word of mouth, or what is jokingly referred to as “the Conch telegraph.”

Today two dailies and a contingent of weeklies and free papers tie the Keys together. Both AM and FM radio stations are still restricted by wattage, and residents must subscribe to satellite or cable service to get television reception.
