Description: Westport’s free summer venue takes the typical town summer concert series and supersizes it. They’ve been running for almost 40 years, and by the summer of 2012, this summer entertainment venue will open a new performance stage and landscaped walks along the Saugatuck River. This is the place to bring a blanket and picnic to enjoy a band. Unlike some town pavilions that feature one performance a week at most during the summer, the Levitt has more than 50 every summer, mixing theater, music, magic, and family entertainment. It also serves as a venue for numerous fund-raising events and is able to bring in big names.

4. Earthplace

Telephone: (203) 227-7253
Address: 10 Woodside Ln.

Description: This nature discovery center for kids has been around since 1958, and manages 2 miles of trails in the largest open space in Westport. It is more than just a 20,000-square-foot nature museum filled with fun activities, though: It’s got a live animal hall from which you can hear the oohs and aahs of children checking out the snakes and ferrets. A favorite among the parents is the birds of prey area, which includes a pair of bald eagles. However, just bringing your children to Earthplace on a random day does not get the full effect. Their genius is in their workshops, like maple sugaring, bird banding, and family campfires. It’s a chance for your kids to connect to nature, yes, but also to connect with you.
