Description: This camp, sponsored by CU-Boulder’s Science Discovery Program, is a well-regarded program that offers a wide variety of classes for kid ages 4 through 16. Classes include excursions to Colorado wonders such as the Great Sand Dunes and Dinosaur National Monuments and Cortez Cultural Center. The program is so popular participants are chosen by a lottery system. There are local programs and overnight options. Activities include hiking, paleontology, river rafting, and mountain biking.

Description: Girls and boys of all ages flock to these camps to work with the head coaches of both the CU women’s and men’s basketball programs. Kathy McConnell-Miller and Jeff Bzdelik and their staff and players hold day and overnight camps, most of them three days long, on the CU campus. There are several specialty camps available including a father-son camp.

Description: The Park Meadows Shopping Center is in Douglas County (and not actually Denver proper). One of the big draws is Nordstrom. There’s also Denver’s first Dillard’s department store. Other popular shops are Crate and Barrel and Restoration Hardware, with all types of gourmet kitchen and unusual decorating items. Park Meadows’ entertainment section has four virtual theaters at a complex called Starport, where you can do things like virtual hang gliding. There are also movie theaters and a massive food-court area. For those who prefer finer dining, there’s the California Cafe with upscale, nouvelle cuisine; Bella Restaurante for Italian food; and Alcatraz Brewing Co., a brewpub.

Description: This drive-through garden has 2.5 square miles of eroded red rocks that are remnants of ancient mountain ranges. The highest rock is 350 feet high, and the strange natural “sculptures” include formations known as Kissing Camels and Balancing Rock. To reach these spectacular natural formations take exit 146 and continue west until it dead-ends. Then take a left onto 30th Street. The park is open 8 a.m. until 8 p.m. daily between May 1 and October 31 and 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. from November 1 to April 30. The visitor center is open 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. in the summer, with shorter winter hours.
