64. California Pizza Kitchen

City: Palm Springs, CA
Category: Tours & Attractions
Telephone: (760) 776-5036
Address: 73-080 El Paseo Dr.

Description: A chain with a massive national reach, CPK has consistently good food, good prices, and a fun, friendly atmosphere that’s a lot more civilized than the usual noisy pizza place. The CPKids Menu features kid-size pizza, pastas, and desserts, so everyone gets his own choice of the many different toppings. As goes with the brand, both CPKs in the desert are sparkling clean, offer quick service, and have enough of a variety that they’re good for much more than one or two stops. Open for lunch and dinner, with a small but good offering of beer and wine. No reservations.

65. Cheesecake Factory

City: Palm Springs, CA
Category: Tours & Attractions
Telephone: (760) 404-1400
Address: 71-800 Hwy. 111

Description: Like CPK, the Cheesecake Factory is a chain, and one that knows how to do a moderate-priced menu well, though on a much more grand scale. In this case, there are more than 200 menu items, with some excellent burgers, sandwiches, salads, and children’s items. The big draw is the dessert menu. Cheesecakes and other sweets aren’t inexpensive, but the portions are huge. You may decide that this is the place to go for a special treat, particularly if you’ve been eating at the more humdrum spots or cooking in your condo. There’s also an extensive bakery section, so keep that in mind when you’re planning picnics. Open for lunch and dinner. No reservations.

66. Don & Sweet Sue’S Café

City: Palm Springs, CA
Category: Tours & Attractions
Telephone: (760) 770-2760
Address: 68-955 Ramon Rd.

Description: Breakfast at Don & Sweet Sue’s is a desert tradition, and lines are very long on the weekends. It’s a big place, though, and the service is spot-on, so you won’t be waiting long. When you have the yen for great platters of fluffy pancakes, crispy waffles, fresh egg and slabs of ham, homemade biscuits and gravy, a side of spicy salsa, fresh grapefruit picked locally, steaming coffee—well, it’s all here, from early in the morning until late at night. The lunches and dinners are also beautifully cooked and reasonably priced, but the breakfast is legendary. It’s a friendly, noisy place with a lot of bustle and a high tolerance for restless kids. Kids menu prices are a fraction of the already reasonable main menu prices. No reservations.

67. Keedy’S Fountain Grill

City: Palm Springs, CA
Category: Tours & Attractions
Telephone: (760) 346-6492
Address: 73-633 Hwy. 111

Description: Keedy’s in Palm Desert, a joint in every perfect aspect of that word, serves real breakfasts and real lunches that are real inexpensive. Everyone in town eats here, from the country club sophisticates in designer sweats stacking lox, tomatoes, red onion, and a few capers on a cream-cheesed bagel to the passel of kids fueling up on flapjacks and hashbrowns and scrambled eggs in preparation for the day’s energy burn. And treat the family to a milkshake.

68. Kobe Japanese Steak House

City: Palm Springs, CA
Category: Tours & Attractions
Telephone: (760) 324-1717
Address: 69-838 Hwy. 111

Description: Kobe Japanese Steak House is a good place to go “fancy” without the fuss and bother that often comes when trying to dine somewhere beyond burgers and the corner pasta shop. The draw here is teppan, which means a variety of meats at least one of which is likely to please everyone in the group. Vegetables are involved—and grilled—which isn’t a bad thing for growing bodies. There’s a built in show that will amuse all. And you sit in a nice community format, so there’s a lot going on. This isn’t the cheapest eat in town but for the quality and the show, it’s worth the extra money, and there’s a special kids menu (and sushi for those averse to flamed food). Open for dinner only.

Description: Beloved by Zagat raters, Red Robin is a nationwide maker of burgers that will make you happy you sat down with the kids rather than buzzing through BurgerMeisters drive-thru. With burgers done more ways than most pizzerias do pizza, chicken sandwiches, wraps, salads, all grilled up hot and tossed fresh, it’s food everyone loves and when you get done the arteries want to say thank you almost as much as your belly. Red Robin is festive, the kids can cut loose a bit, sports fans can catch the game out of the corner of their eye—what’s not to like?
