Description: The mountain road called Oakville Grade (up Trinity Road on the Sonoma side) straddles the Mayacmas Mountains that rise between the Sonoma and Napa Valleys. Trinity Road sprouts from Highway 12 about 8 miles north of the Sonoma Plaza and winds through thickets of manzanita and scrub oaks for 3 miles before reaching Above the Clouds bed-and-breakfast inn. When the fog rolls through the Sonoma Valley, this inn lives up to its name. It’s a secluded mountain retreat that surveys forests and catches the sunset. Three guest rooms are furnished with antique iron or brass beds, and each has a private bath, queen-size bed, down comforters, and lots of pillows. Robes are provided for those who want to take advantage of the swimming pool and spa tub. A gourmet breakfast is served.

Description: This is one of the few Wine Country bed-and-breakfast inns that was actually built as an inn. Visitors of the 1920s and ’30s came by railroad and basked in the sun on the inn’s long verandas. Each of the eight rooms has a private entrance and is furnished in a country motif, with antique furniture and down comforters. The Jack London Room has a sleigh bed and wood-burning stove. An outdoor spa is set amid native landscaping. (Changes and improvements were planned at this inn at press time; check the Web site for updated information.) In the morning, a full breakfast is served by a large cobblestone fireplace in the common room. This is a child-friendly inn.
