Description: Northwest Hospital—Glendale’s first hospital—opened in 1960. In 1983, when it had outgrown its original site, the hospital moved to its current location and was renamed Thunderbird Samaritan Medical Center. Today the hospital is called Banner Thunderbird Medical Center and is owned by Banner Health Systems. It has undergone a lot of major expansion in the past several years, capped by $290 million that added a 16-bed pediatric unit and heart and vascular center, among other updates. The hospital has 397 licensed beds, plus 62 licensed behavioral-health and rehabilitation beds, and primarily serves residents of the Northwest Valley. Its emergency department features 45 fully equipped treatment rooms. The hospital also offers a complete range of gynecological and obstetrical services, including a labor, delivery, and recovery unit, and a nursery that provides expert care for premature infants. The hospital has 12 operating rooms, including several suites for open-heart surgery. Banner Thunderbird offers general surgery, orthopedics, pediatrics, pulmonary care, a critical-care and intensive-care unit, an oncology and urology unit, occupational therapy and rehabilitation services, cardiac care, and renal care. A sleep-disorders program, an outpatient center, and a hospice program are also available. In addition, Banner Thunderbird Behavioral Health offers psychiatric, behavioral-health, and substance-abuse treatment for adults and adolescents on an inpatient basis. The recent overhaul added a 7-story, 200-bed tower and expanded emergency services.
