Breaking from the Gazette.

Not surprising in the least, but definitely not the best news for Beckley and the surrounding areas.

Eh, I'm not surprised. When your whole plan hinges on showing the HLC how much you mean to the community, rather than actually fixing your problems...

TBH, it will continue on in some form, there is too much infrastructure in place for it to simply go away. If MSU goes completely under, it could be a good opportunity for Marshall or WVU to establish a branch campus. The campus already has dorms, class rooms, a library, and office space.

What will happen is that they will have to implement policies and procedures to regain the accreditation. There will be a time frame for that, likely two years. They will then be looked at again.

It'll take longer than 2 years, probably at least 4.

Likely, but if they're making progress as defined in the action plan they'll get an extension.

Did MSU think the HLC wasn't serious?

I know that at my college, even minor issues were dealt with quickly.

Does this actually surprise anyone?

This is probably the best possible outcome.

If MSU does manage to survive, it will have a severely tarnished reputation for years to come.

If MSU does survive, expect a pretty extensive re-branding. It probably wouldn't be called MSU anymore.

Also, I think Martinsburg Mall will be for sale soon. MSU has nearly $30mil in debt to cover.
