A 0.58% payroll deduction from nearly all workers in Washington will fund the first-in-the-nation long-term care insurance program. It is intended to provide a lifetime benefit of up to $36,500 to people who need help with daily activities like bathing, eating or mobility through many services, including in-home care, transportation or nursing home services.

The median income earner making $50,100 will see a $24 monthly or $288 annual payroll deduction, unless they have already obtained an exemption approval letter by having private long-term care insurance. People who are self-employed are not subject to the deduction but can opt into the program.
We need this repealed

Wait. Long Term Care? But lifetime benefit of only $36k? Those don't go together for the scenario described in the bold part. I didn't read the article, so I may have missed something.

Our combined income will make it upwards of $1500 a year. We have good health insurance. A flat rate of $280 per household would be fine, OR maybe making wealthy corporations pay more of their fair share.

We left CA thinking WA would be an improvement in terms of governance and we’re really scratching our heads at this one.

Nope, never knew anyone who used it. Under 40. Seems like BS since we won’t ever use it. 36 k and won’t actually be solvent until 2096. How bout YOU pay for it?

I'm 59 and my wife is 55. There is no chance that either of us will work long enough (10 more years) to even qualify for this LTC benefit. If you don't pay into the program for a minimum of 10 years you get zip. So you can better believe we got ourselves a cheap private policy and an exemption.

How 'you' intend to pay for your LTC?
is the question that every WA resident should asked themselves.
Secondary questions are kinda obvious.
YMMV

The state LTC is a lot of money for little coverage in a limited age range with 10 years required to pay in before being eligible for benefits. It's a money grab and yet another violation of our constitutional rights(being forced to purchase).
I was able to get a private insurance policy that satisfied the LTC requirement AND provided $40k of life insurance for 1/3rd less than what my LTC premium was going to be.

Yes its a joke. 3 months in a care facility and that's gone.
