Some good points made; also consider the far far far west side of Tacoma. Also look at Fircrest.

There are lots of great areas around Tacoma, depending on what you're looking for.... Town, country, suburban... It would certainly not be better to commute from around Seattle. Time spent on the freeway is not quality time. And I agree with the above regarding Tacoma's reputation versus reality. There probably are still areas to be concerned about, but for perspective, I worked in social services in two of the most notorious Tacoma crime spots.... Hilltop and Salishan, in the 90s and never had an incident at either one. I haven't worked in those areas for awhile now, but what I notice driving the freeway and through town now, is the visibility of homeless tents and blight is far less in Pierce County than in either King or Thurston counties. This is anecdotal and only based on what is obvious and visible passing through, but I honestly think Pierce County and Tacoma may be doing something a little more right than their neighbors.

Ruston is a great old historic neighborhood. Puyallup has become very suburban with lots of new growth. Gig Harbor has a more rural feel. Just depends what you're looking for.

You haven't said whether you want to rent or buy, which might also impact where you choose to live.

Here's a 3bd/2ba "Craftsman" house in Tacoma's Northend, not far from the duplex I posted previously, with Lowell also as the elementary (9/10 at GreatSchools):

Another 3bd/2ba "modern" house, also with Lowell as the elementary:

Rentals, also with Lowell as the elementary:
