The traditional way to deal with these sorts of ilk is not to fire them or pay them to go away, but to reassign them to pushing paper in a basement records archive somewhere.

Things certainly have changed in the past 5 yrs, especially within WA State.

$1.5m might be quite cheap for the city compared to a 'natural' reaction of someone with a 27yr+ LE career.

Too bad for all (including the staff of WA state LE agencies)

I know so many who are just clenching their teeth and trying to survive the required days until retirement (and they are all planning to leave WA State, for very sound reasons) Just spent a day with retireed WA State LE officers who have moved out-of-state, and their WA kids / friends / coworkers are right behind them.

Be prepared! (It is not gonna get better for those who are here legally, building and supporting communities)

After the last 2 yrs I no longer have to wonder why so many WA residents have automatic assault weapons and mountains of ammunition. (which previously always amazed me)

That would have probably been a better solution. At least if they continued to pay him he would be doing some work.

Public agencies follow procedures/rules for progressive discipline. They cannot just fire someone without there being some criminal act such as stealing from the agency, falsifying documents, or assaulting a co-worker. In this case there was no crime. In a similar situation, where I work, he would be asked to remove it as offensive to others, and if he complied, there would be no further action. It's only because of the public outcry that they decided to get rid of him, and their only alternative for that was to negotiate a settlement. Was the actual result worse than keeping him? Perhaps, his salary was $158,000 plus possible bonuses, so it was nearly 10 years regular pay. At least it was only half of what he initially asked for.

What was this Nazi item that was posted on his door?
Nobody mentioned this item by name as far as I know.
I tried to find out but couldn’t due to paywalls.

Was it something simple like a German airplane?
Maybe a family member on a tank?

The way the term racist and Nazi are so easily tossed around these days I don’t trust much.
The fact that this guy has never got in trouble or has ever been disciplined holds more weight to me than the accusations.

I am an immigrant from Germany.
The local church down the street from our house I went to was no doubt a “Nazi” church at one time.
It’s name is Frauenkirche.
It is very amazing but I don’t think you will find any Nazi there.

It was a rank insignia, according to the article it apparently corresponds to an SS General. And one of the lines in the article said he was untruthful about not knowing what it was. Even IF he didn't know what it was, you don't get to go posting things on your door, given such a high and public position, without 100% fully knowing what it is you're doing. I don't know if he identifies with or believes in any of the Nazi values, but regardless, you just don't do something like that. I don't know whether or not firing him was the right thing (not enough info for me), but either way it was damn stupid to do that (the rank display). Displaying such things in the privacy of your own home is one thing, but you definitely don't do that at a public-service office.
