For $1.5 million I'd happily post a swastika on my door. It seems to me it should only be a firing offense if he refused to take it down when told it was offensive.

It also depends a lot upon what it actually was. Swastika isn't just about Nazis. it is a also a religious symbol in Near Eastern religions and in the American Southwest. I myself own Navajo weavings that contain swastikas and I display them and it does not indicate that I have any Nazi sympathies. All it means is that I enjoy the culture of the First Peoples.

Police have a weird sort of gallows humor that enables them to cope with all the horrible things they see at work. Maybe it was no more than a joke about him being a tough boss. It does not necessarily mean he is trying to reinstall the third reich.

Yes, the symbol has been seen in many cultures across the world for thousands of years. It's even the shape of the map of level 3 in the NES game Zelda, from 1986. It's apparently a Buddhist symbol, which is common in east Asia where the game was made (Japan).

But, it wasn't that. It was Nazi SS General rank insignia. That's much less ambiguous and less easily dismissed as a misunderstanding or as a benign thing from another culture. I haven't seen anything yet that gives an explanation from him directly about why it was there. Wouldn't be surprised if "It was just there as a joke, because [blah blah blah]".
