How would that solve the problem?

It wouldn’t.
Law enforcement should whenever safe pursue chase and capture bad guys.
Having a no pursuit policy is a bad joke that will effect society in a bad way.

Are car thefts high in Olympia?
The problem with this new Washington state policy is if a person who has broken a traffic law or some criminal offense that may have endangered other people lives or worst, they now know that the police will not gave chase. Making more people who have a disregard for the law to simply speed away and live to commit other offenses because....duh.

You track them and follow without them knowing you’re in pursuit and then arrest them. What’s not to understand here?

And if the car is later found, as you think would happen, and the owner claims he wasn't driving...then what?
Or if they stole the car and ditch it in a Walmart parking lot...then what?

Don't be so naive.

Like everything else, this will be viewed through the political filter that has so many jumping to conclusions. I've been on the freeway when a high speed chase was in progress and it was downright frightening that the entire scene was dominated by two individuals who wanted to have their way. The police officer was a determined young CHP employee and the getaway driver was a young stupid person who had no care about anyone but himself.

The hundreds of other people on that freeway were put in a terrible position as the two cars wound their way around traffic at speeds over one hundred MPH at times. Who benefits when one innocent person dies or gets severely injured as a result of police policies? The short answer is NO ONE.. With today's technology I'm quite certain that we have better choices when the police are confronted with the decision to chase or not.

Police desperately need better tools in order to operate successfully in a far more populated environment, they need better defensive weapons that allow for their target to be struck without the worries of any collateral damage happening, they need better technology when they need to immobilize a vehicle, or an individual. Powerful guns and high speed chases only make the policing job more difficult, stray bullets and high speed crashes are real dangers to the public. Yes, I know Jay Inslee is the Devil incarnate for many on the forum, but many other states/counties, and cities have seen fit to limit the conditions wherein a chase would be called for.

Well, reading the volumes of studies/reports surrounding any issue usually allows one a better understanding of the issue in question, but, that's only true if one is actually attempting to find the truth. Too many here are wound around the axles of political divide to have much interest in anything but their own bias. Here's a link to what is out there at present for police use, the use of drones is mentioned as a future device that is now much more advanced than when this article was written.

A recent poll in our local newspaper has 80+% opposed to this new do not chase law and only 14+% in favor . That is with 665 people responding.
