It looks like there is a good chance this switch could happen across the nation with some states already moving to it ahead of time like Nebraska. What a permanent switch to Daylight Saving Time would mean for Washington state

One of the challenges for us in the north is that we have less light overall than most during winter. So, something has to give. Either daylight ends very (too) early at the low point ~ 4:30pm or the sun rises very (too) late ~ 9am.

While I don't relish the thought of sunrise so late, given the two choices, I think I do prefer that over 4:30pm darkness. Which do you prefer? Just curious.

Derek

Makes no difference to me. I'm not on a clock. We let animals out at dawn and put animals in at sunset, every night all year. It doesn't matter what time it is...

Here’s a different wrinkle… with people working from home more, I would guess they’d be happier with the permanent DST, since they don’t have to commute in the dark in the morning, yet would have a bit of light at the end of the work day.

DST robs daylight from Swing shift workers, but they are not a voting majority, so who cares?

(I can't imagine how terrible it would be to have to WORK INSIDE while the sun is up and awake)

People still don't want to take/send their kids to school in the dark though.

I don't understand the purpose behind the push to permanent DST when our current time zone borders put the vast majority of the population ahead of solar noon even during standard time.

A quote by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine:
We do applaud stopping the switching during the course of the year and settling on a permanent time,” said Jocelyn Cheng, a member of the AASM’s public safety committee. But, she added, “standard time, for so many scientific and circadian rationales and public health safety reasons, should really be what the permanent time is set to.”

Maybe we should split the difference if nobody can agree on which one to pick? I personally would prefer to be on DST, but I have a feeling that most people would actually prefer ST. In Russia they switched to permanent DST in 2011 but ultimately people realised it wasn’t a good fit and they switched to permanent ST in 2014.

“This ends an experiment that began under former president and Putin ally Dmitry Medvedev. In 2011 he switched the clocks to year-round "summer time". The change was initially popular, but a survey last year showed less than a third of Russians wanted to keep the clocks forward all year.
MPs say permanent summer time created stress and health problems, especially for people in northern Russia where the mornings would remain darker for longer during the harsh winter months. They cited medical reports of increased morning road accidents in 2012 compared to previous years, and blamed them firmly on the 2011 time change.”

We should do offset time zones based on a north south divide! Ha!
