I live in the Vancouver area. A suburb called Surrey, on "0 Ave," which runs right along the border. We're about two blocks from the Peace Arch crossing.

I can't remember the last time I braved the traffic to go to the concrete jungle called downtown Vancouver. However, I do travel a lot into Whatcom County. Everything (food, gas, beer, clothes, etc) is cheaper there than it is here, and it's really a pretty - and far, far less congested - place. And much less rain than Vancouver too, because it's not so pushed up against the mountains.

In fact, I often get on my bicycle and hop across the border just to ride through the farm country of Lynden and then on to the seaside village of Birch Bay. (I just got back from one of those rides 15 minutes ago.)

Vancouver holds nothing for me (and don't get me started on the insane price of real estate up here), but I do feel a kinship with my slightly southerly neighbours.

You need a passport or an enhanced driver's license.

Going through customs didn't take very long when I last went up there. Not much more than 30 minutes. They had several customs officers working.
