I am looking for family friendly neighborhoods in DC, Maryland, or Virginia, where I can find at least a three bedroom two bath house for $850,000 or less. Schools are unimportant, but quality of neighborhood and safety is. I would love to be able to take public transportation, but I can drive if needed. Would prefer to keep my commute under one hour.

We cannot rent to begin with for a variety of reasons, so I need to narrow down appropriate neighborhoods. Thank you for any help help

I have an adult child with a disability, and it seems like Maryland might be slightly better for intellectual disability

The biggest issue will be finding convenient public transit to the AU campus which is nestled in an area fairly far from a subway station. Driving will be your most time efficient method to/from work. Neighborhoods in Maryland around Rockville and Bethesda would be the easiest commute and offers desirable neighborhoods. My other recommendation would be the neighborhoods in DC's northern tip just below the MD state line around Shepherd Park, Colonial Village and Takoma Park which offer easy driving commutes as well.

Default Thank you! I will start there

Stinks that it is not easily accessible by train, but good to know in advance!

There is a station on the Metro Red Line subway designated AU-Tenleytown but it's really just a designation as a transfer point to a Metrobus or AU shuttle bus route that will take you to the AU campus, being its way too far to walk. It might not be such a bad deal at rush hour(s) with increased frequency of service however.

Rockville and Bethesda are on the Red Line and the other neighborhoods previously mentioned are in upper Northwest/Northeast DC close to the Silver Spring station, which is on the opposite end of the Red Line but would be a long round about schlep to Tenleytown. They however could arguably offer the better driving commute given they aren't an outbound to inbound destination, and vice versa at rush hour.
