Hi

I'm possibly going to be relocating to Long Beach (from Tampa Bay) later this year. There are 4 of us, with the 2 kids still in school (7 yo in elementary, 10 yo going into middle).
I'm looking for some advice on neighbourhoods/cities to look at that will be:
- safe
- good public schools
- reasonable commute into SE Long Beach (upto 45 mins)
- 3/4 br home rental of up to $3,500/mo

Those really are our main priorities. Coming from flat Florida, the idea of living near the hills is appealing. We are outdoors people, so accesibility of parks and open spaces are really more important than bars, restaurants, etc.

Ideally we'd like a more established neighbourhood where we're likely to find other families with similar aged kids.

Thank you for any advice you can offer!

Sounds like Irvine's your best bet, especially if you can relocate near the 405.

Quick check of the MLS this house looks pretty good....

2274 N Rockridge Pl, ORANGE, CA 92867 | Listing Information | Southern California MLS homes for sale (http://www.socalmls.com/CA/ORANGE/92867/rentals/2274-N-Rockridge-Pl-58514088/popup - broken link)

Your options are Orange Hills (east orange), Yorba Linda, Anaheim Hills, Villa Park...South County commuting on the the 405 would be a nightmare, plus there are not many "hills" along the 405.

closest hills to long beach would be palos verdes (besides signal hill but that is too small to count IMHO), but that is a very expensive area. the other direction has hills, but they are going to be a hefty drive from long beach. you may consider just living in long beach. the southeast portion of long beach is actually very nice and has good schools to boot within your price range. you could get a nice house and live close to work and the beach, what more could you ask for?

Is there actually much of a beach in Long Beach?

Long beach is very close to long beach, and parts of the city meet your ctieria.

In Southern Ca quality of life is very tightly related to how short you can make your commute.

The commute from OC to Long Beach is about to get a lot longer for a while.

There are some very nice areas in Long Beach! Depending on your budget you could look into living in Naples or in the Belmont Shore area. Schools are pretty good, I think. There is a very diverse population in Long Beach so if you are at all intolerant to racial mixing or alternative lifestyles, Long Beach may not be for you.

Just inland from Long Beach are Cypress (Orange County) and Cerritos (LA County) which both have great schools and a reputation for safety. The commute to LB from either of these cities would be rather easy.

Long Beach has Signal Hill. There are some fine views and places up there now that the oil towers are almost gone.
