Have you ever found a whip-o-will nest out in the woods? They will pretend they have a broken wing to lure you away from the nest. And as soon as you get within ten feet of them . . . they fly off a short piece and again pretend they can't fly.

Yeah, my sister and I used to do it on purpose when we were kids cause we thought it was fun. We were rotten Fortunately we grew up. Now I'm just a brat. It is an amazing thing to watch though. I love to here them at dusk. They'er call will travel for miles. It's an eerie and beautiful sound. Morning Doves too!

The one thing you don't want however is a whip-o-will who decides to spend every night on top of your house. It can get really annoying really quickly. Then . . . no more Mr. Whip-O-Will.

Yup!! I can see that. I've never had one get that close to the house. They usually stay way back in the woods. You're right though that eerie beautiful sound close up and personal would bring on homicidal tendencies.

Yes, and a particular dangerous thing to do to a rural southern family . . . who often have a small arsenal.

From the long list I'm seeing I will certainly enjoy the birds there. And you all remind me it's time to get feeders set up. Had them down for major yard work last year and haven't got them back up yet. Not today though, the weatherperson is saying up to 4" of rain and storms. If right now is any indication the forecast is right on target...

I LOVE mockingbirds! They come around early spring, but I don't see them much after that.

Anyone know what looks yummy to them in a feeder? I'd like to have more show up in the yard.

Supposedly, mockingbird have changed their eating habit somewhat due to living around humans. They were once mostly insect eaters but they've developed a real taste for fruit.

They'll eat a few sunflower seed, but it's not their favorite. If you happen to be able to find some ripe persimmons in winter, the mockingbirds will love you. You can also throw out a cut-up apple, or piece of melon, and that sort of thing.
