Why? We already have villages that offer walkability. so, you could really build around and even within them.

You can also build new communities, but that aren't generic looking as well.

The Syracuse area and Rochester area should invite the Mormons from Utah to relocate here as a place to find lower priced homes if they can't find affordable housing in Utah. If thousands of Mormons relocate here, it could help local companies fill the vacant jobs and bring new vitality to the area.

Why WNY and CNY?

The historical connection.

"Palmyra, NY is regarded as the birthplace of the Mormon religion. In 1820 near Palmyra, fourteen year old Joseph Smith claimed to have been visited by God, the Father, and Jesus Christ. An event the Mormons call "The First Vision"."

Why? Utah isn’t known for being expensive, they are in a place with a strong religious presence and the metro areas in that state are growing at a pretty high rate. Plus, Utah has plenty of room for its population to grow.

Also, Palmyra hosted this related event annually until 2019, as the church decided to end the large gathering: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hill_Cumorah_Pageant

It appears to be similar to Runnings, which has a location in Clay; Dicks, Gander Mountain(has a Cicero location) and Bass Pro(in the Auburn area). So, the area has similar types of stores.

I think the Ferris wheel in Omaha has more to do with the shopping center itself, similar to the Carousel in Destiny USA(formerly Carousel Center). Some other stores have some other things similar to the things you can find at Destiny or in other shopping areas like Par’s Golf in DeWitt. So, the area has many of these things already in place.

In terms of economic growth, the key is building up the main streets in the city. Especially those that are not up to their potential. I mentioned some ideas in the revitalization/gentrification thread. Tapping into Main Street funding and other options for business development would be the way to go. To be honest, what would make things appealing is that those areas I have in mind could have a business base that serve the community they are in, but also could attract people from outside of those communities as well.

Also, in a tourism sense, the area could tap into things it has, but has not maximized, like an Underground Railroad tour/history/guide or have a consolidated sports museum/Hall of Fame. With the second idea, there could be an amalgamated museum with the Greater Syracuse Sports Hall of Fame/the Urban Sports Hall of Fame, with inclusion of Syracuse University and other college sports greats. You could also attract it with play theme similar to Rochester’s museum, but with a sports theme and/or even have a sports facility that can host AAU Tournaments, Indoor Soccer, etc. You could even put this in the Inner Harbor/Franklin Square area.

Also, like the wine tours you have in the Finger Lakes, you can have Fall apple orchard tours along Route 20. You can have Skaneateles and Cazenovia bracket the orchards, which it does and could be included as an option at the end and/or beginning of the tour.

I’d also would like to see ethnic food weeks like you might see in other areas, like a Black Restaurant Week, an Asian Restaurant Week, a Hispanic Restaurant Week. All of those things are a possibility in the area.

Another quality of life aspect would be to have more school options in the city like bringing in say an Eagle Academy or other charter(outside of the current options) and independent school options. I mentioned this in that thread as well, though one of the buildings was bought by a Rochester based property company for housing.

So, those are some things that came to my mind.

Other things that to bring back the Dunk Your Junk campaign with cans along main streets in the city.

Have a Parks and Rec./PAL Basketball league with teams from different parks or have tournaments at specific parks similar to the scene in NYC or the tournament they have at Wilson Park, but at parks like Barry Park, Thornden Park, Sunnycrest Park, Schiller Park, Kirk Park, Lewis Park, Upper Onondaga Park, Machesney Park(which has an indoor facility at the Armond Magnarelli Center), Homer Wheaton Park, etc. You could also use the Southwest Community Center, the city high schools as indoor options on rainy days. Same in terms of other sports or even have it to where it is a different sport in late June/July and another in late July/August. Other things like music, the arts, academic/occupational camps, field trips, etc. can be intertwined as well. This is something that helps keep kids active and shows a sense of true investment into their lives. If you invest in your youth, you are investing in your future and in turn, they are more likely to stay or you attract more people.

Given that article, it would likely be based in Oswego due to its facilities and location.

That is already a work in progress as there are 2 facilities in Honeoye Falls and Henrietta, and the STAMP facility in Alabama is going to be a NE hub, according the Schumer, who was in Rochester last week to make the announcement.
