It's a bummer to not buy a relevant/desirable house due to its high taxes.
Walkability is one advantage I see in regards to living in a village.

Also, taxes will vary by the village and even household. Some villages may not have all of the layers of services as another village. So, just make sure you do your research.

Walkability is definitely the #1 advantage. Also, the village taxes pay for village police, which keeps the village safe. In addition, different villages offer different amenities paid for by village taxes. For example, in Bville, the village has curbside pickup of leaves and brush. This is an amazing benefit. In Liverpool, the village is responsible for plowing the sidewalks. In a CNY winter, this is also an amazing benefit.

Villages can also have their own park systems(North Syracuse and East Syracuse are a couple that come to mind). For instance, both have public pools and the village of North Syracuse allows for sledding at Centerville Park. There are also other programs that the Parks and Rec departments in those villages have during the summer as well. So, that could be another thing to consider in regards to village services.

Here is a street view of the park: https://www.google.com/maps/@43.1333...7i13312!8i6656

You will occasionally see kids sledding down the hill behind the basketball court.

No problem and the village has a library nearby, a couple of ice cream shops, some restaurants, the Pre-K program school for the district, a bowling alley, a couple of bakeries, churches, apartments, etc. on its Main Street the next block over(on the other side of the cemetery across the street from the park).

Here is some more park info: Parks & Recreation | Village of North Syracuse, NY

If you're into live music. Paper Mill Island in Baldwinsville is having a resurgence this year. In recent years, the village hasn't booked shows. After some citizen input and complaints about its lack of use, the village hired a promoter and there will be many more shows there this summer. In addition to the village sponsored free concert series on Tuesday nights, below is a listing of the paid concerts booked to date. These are real artists will large followings, all within a few blocks walk from most resident of bville village.

May 17: Umphrey's McGee

May 19: Get The Led Out

May 20: Dark Star Orchestra

June 27: Nahko and Medicine for the People

July 22: Matisyahu

July 28: Devon Allman Project

Aug. 1: Gary Clark Jr.

Google image search "Paper Mill Island" for past shows. It is a great venue!
