Just a part of that very special Maryland pretentiousness.

Yes, I'm somewhat cynical.
Subaru's Forester was their original crossover SUV started in 1998. The Outback used to be the wagon version of the Legacy until 2005 when the EPA upgraded it to an SUV. Foresters are assembled in Japan, and Outback's in Indiana. Subaru discontinued the turbo engine for the Forester after 2018, and replaced the 6 cylinder engine in the Outback with a turbo in 2020.

Maybe it is time that Subaru stop producing competing everyman SUVs and stick to selling Outback's with the turbo engines. They can upgrade the Outback to a hybrid and begin to market it more agessively against upscale SUVs like the new generation of Toyota 4Runner expected in 2024.

The 2024 Toyota 4Runner will be underpinned by a new platform. This will be the TNGA-F architecture, also present in the 2023 Tundra and the 2023 Sequoia, among others. With this, it will also get a new engine, which it will likely share with the vehicles mentioned above. This unit will probably be the twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 engine that is part of Toyota's new i-FORCE MAX hybrid powertrain. It may also get the Hybrid MAX powertrain that's used in the Lexus RX 500h SUV.

In Feb 2023 the average transaction price for the industry was $48,763, so I am no sure if you consider the Toyota Highlander or 4Runner a luxury model any more.
  • $40,220 2023 Highlander Hybrid LE
  • $43,220 2023 Highlander Hybrid XLE
  • $45,980 2023 Highlander Bronze Edition
  • $47,475 2023 Highlander Hybrid Limited
  • $50,675 2023 Highlander Hybrid Platinum
  • $39,555 2023 4Runner SR5
  • $42,415 2023 4Runner TRD Sport
  • $42,615 2023 4Runner SR5 Premium
  • $43,400 2023 4Runner TRD Off-Road
  • $45,980 2023 4Runner TRD Off-Road Premium
  • $47,120 2023 4Runner 40th Anniversary Special Edition
  • $48,790 2023 4Runner Limited
  • $54,020 2023 4Runner TRD Pro
  • $38,445 2023 Outback Wilderness
  • $38,595 2023 Outback Onyx Edition XT
  • $39,695 2023 Outback Limited XT
  • $42,295 2023 Outback Touring XT

While it may not be possible for the Subaru outback to compete with Lexus models, I think if they drop the smaller engine and let Forester pick up that market, it may be possible for an upgaded hybrid Outback to compete with the Toyota 4Runner and Highlander.

Subaru does not reveal "take rates" or how many vehicles are sold with the small or large engines. Starting in 2024 the Impreza, Crosstrek, Legacy, and the Outback have a choice of engines.

Other than the Land Cruiser, Toyota has never been a premium brand. It’s a middle class brand.

That may be, but they are increasingly pushing their hybrids into price territory previously reserved for Lexus.
  • Toyota Sequoia
  • $58,365 2023 SR5
  • $64,765 2023 Limited
  • $70,965 2023 Platinum
  • $75,365 2023 Capstone
  • $76,065 2023 TRD Pro

It is inevitable that Subaru will adopt Toyota hybrid technoloy as they are now 20% owned by Toyota and Subaru is a part of Toyota Automotive Group.

The 2022 EPA Automotive Trends Report, Subaru sold 22% of their vehicles in the US in 2021 as turbocharged. The WRX, and Ascent, which are exclusively turbocharged and the Legacy and Outback, which are optionally turbocharged were 45% of Subaru sales in 2021. I hope that Subaru will add hybrid technology to the turbocharged vehicles to make them more efficient (and more expensive), but leave the naturally aspirated vehicles alone.
