Subaru struggles to compete with McDonald's on wages as U.S. inflation bites
Soaring labor costs are one reason the company says it's not thinking of new investments to build EVs in the U.S. anytime soon. .... Those soaring American labor costs, CEO Tomomi Nakamura said, are one reason his company is not thinking of new investments to build electric vehicles in the U.S. anytime soon....“In Indiana, part-time workers at McDonald’s earn $20 to $25 per hour, which is in competition with what temporary workers make at our plant,” Nakamura said. “If we were to build a new plant, it would be very difficult to hire new people for that. Labor costs are rising now. It is quite challenging for us to secure workers for our Indiana plant, including those of suppliers.”

A few questions:
(1) Since when do part time McDonald's workers earn $20 to $25 per hour?
(2) If Subaru sells only token numbers of Solterras, how will they comply with CARB regulations that seek 35% ZEVs by 2026?

  • 2022 2021 Model
  • 12,898 10,622 Crosstrek
  • 11,740 12,885 Outback
  • 9,136 12,894 Forester
  • 5,105 4,998 Ascent
    .
  • 2,549 2,899 Impreza
  • 1,831 1,897 Legacy
  • 1,439 2,262 WRX
  • 271 193 BRZ
  • 44,968 48,651 Monthly
    .
  • 38,879 41,399 SUVS
  • 6,090 7,252 Cars

Subaru is selling 5,390 vehicles per month in California. If we calculate 35% of that amount that is 1887 per month. Subaru will have to basically sell nearly every Solterra they produce in California to reach 1887 per month, and it will be a tough sell without the $7500 tax incetive.

Maybe Nakamura's info or comment was lost in translation...
Fwiw, McD's shows full time work ads of $20 an hour in a few IN locations.

When I look in Indeed for McDonald's jobs in Boston (a high cost city), "Team Member" and "Crew Member" are being offered $14-$17/hr. Moreover everyone doesn't work at Mcdonald's. If Subaru can't afford to hire American workers then the pay scales must be too high here generally for them. I think that would be news to many American workers.

Working at McDonald is not the same as working for an auto factory, you dont really learn much at McDonald, but you can learn a lot more valuable skills working in a factory,
Some dont like to deal with retail customers,

Law firms here are around 70k, not sure about medical/dental. Larger firms tend to pay better as frankly a good law clerk is worth much more than that.

Here in the Seattle area, McD is paying $20 or close to it in most locations. Our state minimum wage is $15.74, in Seattle it's $18.69, but no one will work for that. There is a Krispy Kreme that is only open 6am-3pm due to lack of help. Ads for help wanted at the McDs in the suburban cities east of Seattle: "$17.75 / hour (or we will match your current wage)". Meanwhile, the fast lube/oil change places are paying only minimum wages. I don't know what dental hygienists are making, but I had my teeth cleaned by the dentist, because they were short on help.

In any case at USD/JPY=142 it is clear that Subaru is not going to move any production to the US. Not the Crosstrek nor the Solterra nor the Forester.

Subaru production in Indiana

  • FY 2012 252,838
  • FY 2013 271,583
  • FY 2014 262,053
  • FY 2015 297,734
  • FY 2016 313,511
  • FY 2017 342,000
  • FY 2018 348,597
  • FY 2019 372,162

The Massachusetts minimum wage is $14.25 transitioning to $15 on January 1. Nobody makes $14/hour in Massachusetts unless it’s a tip job like waitress.

The thing people seem to be missing here is fully burdened cost vs the headline hourly wage. McDonald’s generally staffs with part time workers held to 32 hours per week so they don’t receive any benefits. Most McDonald’s are franchises with employee head count below 50 and avoid many of the healthcare mandates. Subaru has health/dental/vision, 401(k) matching, paid sick time, paid vacation time, etc. Their hourly labor cost is much higher than McDonald’s.
