The 2003 Legend we had was sold at 4 years with 40k miles. The second owner drove it to ~100K when the head gaskets were replaced. It broke 200k miles on March 11, 2019 with the third owner. It is still registered as active although it is in the shop quite a lot.
The head gasket part is not very expensive, it is the labor that is difficult requiring an 8 hour day for an experienced mechanic. The vehicles that are being purchased by mechanics probably last a long time as they can do their own work.

There are actually EJ15, EJ16, EJ18, EJ20, EJ22 engines dating back to 1989. None of them had a reputation for head gasket problems.
In 1996 in the EJ25 was first introduced in the Legacy 2.5GT, LSi, and Legacy Outback. This model was the first to use the single layer coated gasket.
