That would be the STI. The "regular" WRX is rated at 224HP and 235 lb-ft of torque. BTW, the STI's horsepower rating for the upcoming 2008 model year is 305HP. IMO the biggest bit of news is that they are finally going to sell the STI in hatchback form. I always wanted an STI wagon. An STI hatch is close enough.

- Also need hatchback or wagon for storage, since I'll be throwing all my stuff in the back.

My adult daughter (24) purchased the vehicle new. It was comfortable enough, but definitely not for a long (7+ hour) car ride. My legs, back, and butt were pretty sore after traveling back and forth between Northern Idaho and Boise. Gas mileage was reasonable - 25+ on the highway. She didn't have a stick - instead she had the automatic with the sport shifter. I would imagine you could improve gas mileage some if you had a manual transmission. She did have some quality control issues - the head liner kept coming out (passenger and driver side) and the leather upholstery was pretty wimpy. The headliner was covered under warranty - the upholstery was not. Big plus - the car handled snow/ice like a champ!

actually the 06-07 WRX with the ej255 made 202/234 at the wheels on cobb's mustang dyno. if you count 20% driveline loss thats 242/280 crank... yeah my new one is a bit more powerful than my old 03, also rated by subaru at 224hp (those put down around 175-180 wheel hp on average)

We absolutely love our 2000 Subaru Legacy. We just paid it off and plan to do some modifying now. Not only did it keep us safely driving for 5 years in Alaska but then it drove us from AK to the East Coast and half way back again! We won't trade it for anything except a new one. My personal dream would be to get it rally ready and go on a "real" drive.

We are on our third Subaru (2002 Outback VDC) and LOVE driving it. It is sweet--smooth driving and handling. Extremely comfortable in every way. After test-driving some fancy cars and being disappointed in the ride/handling, we returned to Subaru and happily bought the Outback.

The first two Subarus ('86 wagon and '93 Legacy) were purchased used and quite dependable. They weren't fancy, but they did the job.

I have a 2002 Legacy wagon I purchased new. at 90,000 miles the engine failed - main bearings the dealer said. Since the car was well out of warrantee, it cost me $3400+ to replace the engine (a factory rebuilt with 36K mile, 36 month warrentee, work done by dealer). This car made knocking sounds when the outside temps droped in the Fall. Dealer said not to worry, it was a quirck of the engine. As long as the knock went away when the engine warmed up there was nothing to worry about. Consumer reports reliability ratings show 2001, 2002 and 2003 Subs have much worse than average engine problems. Has any one else experienced similar problems?

If your principles are worth 1 mpg at the expense of all other considerations, I suppose that's your business. But that seems kind of simplistic to me.

Somehow I don't think this is correct. Subaru's are full time AWD and if I am not mistaken, the power is split 55-45 front to back at max and at the min it is 90-10 or something like that.

it depends. 4EAT cars (autos) are 90/10 initially. manual trans cars are 50/50, and the STI changed its initial lockup nearly every year ranging from 50/50 to something like 42/68.

Most Subaru autos are 90/10 in normal driving conditions (which is really just another way of saying it's FWD until the front wheels slip, they just throw in that 10% to acknowledge that some slip is allowed so the front and rear wheels can turn at different speeds around corners). WRX and Legacy GT automatics are 55/45. Come to think of it, I don't know what the torque split is on the new normally aspirated Legacys with automatics. But any way you look at it, even the 90/10 system is considered "full-time" AWD, because all the "full-time" designation means is that the driver doesn't have to press a switch or lock the hubs or whatever to engage the 4WD system; rather, the system is always active.
