OTher than the Bank itself and I believe one other business the rest of that block is vacant along with the old Sumter Electric/Rewinding complex south of East Oakland Street. They could quite frankly close Oakland from Main to Harvin and create a super block where a mixture of parking, office, and retail could be placed....
And the bank is closed/vacant. There is a thriving small engine repair shop next to it.

It appears Sumter does not have a sporting goods store like Dick's Sporting Goods and Academy Sports and Outdoors. Are either chain in speculation of coming?

No. Closest thing to that would be the main branch of Simpson's. They are the biggest sporting goods store in town. As much as I would love to see an Academy here, I just don't think the demographics support it yet.

I think Academy Sports and Outdoors would quickly succeed in Sumter. I have found it to be a better option than Dick's Sporting Goods and Sports Authority in recent years.

One thing it would do is put Simpson's out of the sporting goods business.
We sure have no shortage of dollar stores in Sumter. Between Dollar General, Family Dollar, and Dollar Tree, I think we pretty much have that market covered. And I'm really just talking about stores in the city limits, but I see these stores are scattered about the county as well.

I wonder if any Sumter area Dollar Tree and Family Dollar stores will close due to their merger.
Doubtful. They just built 2 brand new Family Dollars.
I would not expect any new Family Dollar stores to close. Low performing stores in direct competition with Dollar Tree would be likely to close. A list of Dollar Tree and Family Dollar stores closing directly resulting from the merger has not been released.
