Hopefully this is the right location for this question. I have a plot in California that has been passed down to me from 1951 when it was purchased. I want to sell it because I am far away from California and won't be needing it.

They have these cemetery brokers in Los Angeles. And it seems all they do is charge you for a classified ad space on their website for $200 to $1000 with no guarantees your plot sells. There is craigslist and ebay and cheap options.

I was just wondering if anyone had experience in selling a plot and the best way to go about it. I could find very little chatter about this topic anywhere online.

I wonder if you could sell it back to the cemetary? Just a thought.

No they don't buy them. They used to assist in the process of listing them for sale for you but they stopped doing that.

My MIL had one, and a semi-distant family member passed away unexpectedly. She “gave” it to his family, and bought another for herself. I don’t know if they paid her for it, or not.

The cemetery where a lot of our family is buried charges about triple for an immediate need lot than one purchased pre-need. The whole cemetery business is a topic for another thread.

Contact the closest senior center in the area. See if they have a newsletter where you can place an ad. My local senior center's monthly newsletter has a section for ads. I have no idea what they would cost.

Here we buy them from our church.

But looks like that is not an option for you?

How about getting in contact with the local funeral homes?

We sold 2 plots back to the cemetery in New York. We are 1200 miles away and would never use them.

Please give the OP the way you sold them so they may try that since you were successful.

I haven't gotten around to it yet, but I actually noted the names on the surrounding crypts (not gravesites, in my case). I figured I'd contact relative, if I could locate them, to see if they'd like to be "neighbors" with their departed loved ones. And no, the cemetery won't help you find buyers; there's no money in that for them. Although they WILL charge you a transfer fee!

MIL bought lots for the immediate family so we will be happily together forever without letting anyone know. When she is gone we will offer our plots to the general family. Next to my MIL and the utility yard in Phoenix City, AL is not my idea of a forever home nor do I want to profit from it.

OP have you spoken with local funeral homes about your intentions to sell at maybe a discount?
