Hmm, there is only one way to SFO, Hwy 101. I'm always paranoid there will be a huge wreck on Hwy 101, I-80, and the Bay Bridge will be shut down. BART has been know to make passengers miss flights.

5 north is 2 lanes in that area and there are no real backroads to take. It’s just something that has LwYs concerned me. I wish they would do something about that to go along with all the improvements.

But there are backroads to SMF, googlemap it. Notice that part of the freeway was set up to expand up to 4 lanes each side. I'm sure that will happen when it is actually really needed. They will likely start with an extra far left lane on each side. I know when accidents have occurred between downtown and the airport they clear them fast.

You know this situation can happen anywhere on any freeway and on any freeway near a major airport. Have you been on the 405 near LAX, NIGHTMARE, or the 101 near SFO, NIGHTMARE, or the 5 near Lindberg Field in San Diego, NIGHTMARE, or 880 near Oakland Airport, or the 101/880 near San Jose Airport, NIGHTMARE.

From the SMF website:

DELTA ANNOUNCES NEW NONSTOP SERVICE TO DETROIT IN JUNE
SACRAMENTO – Delta (DL) has announced it will offer daily, year-round, nonstop service between Sacramento (SMF) and Detroit, Michigan (DTW) beginning June 17, 2019. This is the sixth Delta hub airport with nonstop service to and from Sacramento International.

“We are excited Delta is adding daily, nonstop service to Detroit,” say Mark Haneke, Air Service Development Manager for the Sacramento County Department of Airports. “This new service will offer Sacramento travelers easy connections to and from the East Coast as well as westbound connections from Europe.”

Flight schedule is as follows:

Detroit – Sacramento

Depart DTW: 7:55 p.m.
Arrive SMF: 10:05 p.m.

Sacramento – Detroit

Depart SMF: 10:50 p.m.
Arrive DTW: 6:14 a.m. (next day)

This new Detroit service marks the 42ndnonstop destination for SMF and positions the airport for continued growth. Sacramento International has seen 10% year over year passenger growth and is on track to serve 12 million passengers in 2018.

What I like about Delta's new NonStop to Detroit is that Detroit is a major hub for DELTA

From Detroit you can go nonstop to: London, Paris, Amsterdam, Frankfurt and Sao Paulo, Brazil

Just another way to get to Europe or South America from Sacramento without having to drive down to the Bay.

Sacramento has NON-STOP-DIRECT FLIGHTS to all the major hub airports going EAST to Europe:

Chicago, Denver, Minneapolis, Atlanta, JFK, Newark, Dallas, Houston, Orlando, Philadelphia, Charlotte, Salt Lake City, Boston, Washington DC(Dulles), Baltimore, Phoenix, Las Vegas AND NOW DETROIT

And you could fly from the West Coast and avoid Bay Area airports, by flying from Sacramento connecting in: Seattle, Portland, Los Angeles.

Sacramento International Airport (SMF) made it over 12,050,000 passengers in 2018.

SMF is getting 2 New Escape Lounges:
one in Terminal A and one in Terminal B. You don't have to be a member of an frequent flyer program or have platinum/gold status to use the lounges

Another reason not to use a Bay Area airport. Although according to this website Sacramento is a Bay Area Airport, lol.

"The greater California Bay Area has four large international airports although the one most under-the-radar is likely the state's capital airport, Sacramento International (SMF)........:

Sacramento International is adding another city-Santa Barbara- to its long list of Non-stop direct flight options.

"This convenient nonstop service.. to Santa Barbara.. will appeal to business and leisure travelers alike and a great option for quick getaways to the...south-central.. coast."

Santa Barbara is a popular tourist and weekend getaway destination.

What airline is running the Santa Barbara flights? It would be nice to have a reasonable flight option to Santa Barbara it's typically crazy expensive to fly in and out of there.

Sacramento Int'l Airport (SMF). Has anyone ever thought of giving it the nickname Smurf Airport?

It might catch on.
